Test of Maritime English for Cruise Ship Staff Syllabus / CPD Approved (Online)

Course Description:

The CPD Accredited Test of Maritime English for Cruise Ship Staff is an English test designed to assist cruise ship operators and employers make recruiting and training decisions by assessing the English language understanding and skills of existing or potential cruise ship employees. The assessment is suitable for candidates of any role, rank or nationality.  

IMO Guidelines:

The test is designed around the approved guidelines for Maritime English developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These guidelines are combined with internationally-recognized methods for English language testing to form a rigorous and accurate testing system for use in the maritime sector.

Testing of Competence:

The test assesses candidates’ English language competence up to the level of ‘low-intermediate’ (CEFR (Europe): A2/B1 and ILR (United States): Level 1+). A candidate at this level will be able to understand and produce frequently used expressions relating to areas of most immediate relevance in a cruise ship context.

Course Subjects:

The test has been carefully designed around IMO industry guidelines and includes:

  • Comprehension of spoken and written emergency commands

  • Location and purpose of health and safety and emergency equipment

  • Ranks, roles and routines of crew members and officers

  • Interactions with customers, fellow crew members and officers

  • Understanding areas of the ship and directions

  • Responding to customer needs: Food and drink orders, directions, everyday problems

  • Time and numeracy situations involving customers and crew 

Course Certification:

On completion of the test, a CPD Approved certificate showing the candidate’s total score will be available for printing or saving to computer hard drive. The score is shown as a percentage of correct answers out of the total 60 questions.

Test of Maritime English for Seafarers & Deck Officers Syllabus / CPD Approved (Online)

TEST Description:

The Test of Maritime English for Deck Officers is an English test designed to assist ship operators and employers make recruiting and training decisions by assessing the English language understanding and skills of existing or potential Deck Officers. The assessment is suitable for candidates of any rank or nationality.  

IMO Guidelines:

The test is designed around the approved guidelines for Maritime English developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These guidelines are combined with internationally-recognised methods for English language testing to form a rigorous and accurate testing system for use in the maritime sector.

Testing of Competence:

The test assesses candidates’ English language competence between the levels of ‘Upper-Intermediate’ and ‘Advanced’ (CEFR (Europe): B2 to C1 and ILR (United States): Level 2 to 3). A candidate at these levels will be able to understand and produce frequently used expressions relating to areas of most immediate relevance to the function of a Deck Officer on board ship.

Approximately 90 minutes
